Artex Removal

At Plasterers Preston we are always asked about Artex Removal in Plasterers Preston.Plasterers Preston Artex Removal

Whether you have modern Artex in your home done by an artex company or a DIY person most people seem to want rid of it.

There are still a lot of houses in the Uk that have an Artex or textured finish . The vast majority of this finish is on ceilings.

Even houses built today have textured ceilings. Due to it being cheaper than skimming during construction.

We did also have a big thing in the UK about Artex in the 80`s.

This means there’s still a lot about.

Here are some pointers to considerwith your Artex Removal

If its modern artex in a newish house on a straight forward wall or ceiling then the job is quite straight forward.

Basically to get rid of your artex or textured finish you re-skim over the top.

The problem arises if it’s a heavy textured finish achieved with plaster finish not Artex.

This causes problems due to plaster being coarser and harder than Artex,  when you come to scrape it down prior to re-skimming .

If the Artex is on a ceiling and heavy you can plasterboard over the top prior to re-skimming. If its on solid plaster and difficult to scrape you will need to give it a coat of backing plaster prior to skimming.

We at Preston Plasterers are experts in all textured finishes and there removal.

Good luck with yours!!!

Help and Tips Patching Part 2

When Plastering in Preston we come across lots of simple patching work so we have written an update to Help and Tips for Patching Part 1

As a Plasterer in Preston we also get asked lots of questions about Patching Plaster so here are some pointers from Time served Plasterers Preston

Ceiling patches to lats.

  • if your patching to a ceiling on lats not plasterboard then you need to remove as much dust as possble from the lats prior to plastering.
  • you must use bonding plaster first as a finishing plaster is difficult to get to stick.
  • if theres enough thickness try screwing a 9.5mm plasterboard on to the lats, this will be easier to skim.
  • if you have to use bonding don`t mix to stiff or to soft.
  • build up coat by coat, let bonding set prior to skimming as the skimming will peel during trowelling.
  • keep existing plaster clean at all times to stop the piecing showing after decorating.
  • if the patch is most of the ceiling area think about plasterboarding over the whole ceiling and skiming, taking time to find the ceiling joists first.

Ceiling patches to plasterboard.

  • Make sure you use the right thickness of plasterboard to match the existing.
  • cut existing ceiling back to a solid timber as you`ll need something to screw too.
  • use proper lenght of screws at least 35mm in length.
  • make sure the plasterboard used has good edges for screwing.
  • make sure the new piece of plasterboard and the old has a small a gap as possible, no more than 5mm
  • again if the area is large, consider re boarding all the ceiling.

Help and Tips for Patching Part 1, from Preston Plasterers

When Plastering in Preston we come across lots of simple patching work.

As a Plasterer in Preston we also get asked lots of questions about Patching Plaster

Here are a few tips and help with those Patches, and whether or not it is a good idea to have a go yourself

  • If it is a simple hollow or hairline crack with no depth a fine filler is best. Anything that is more than 10mm deep is better done with finishing plaster.
  • If  it is back to the brickwork or block then a backing coat should be used first before the finishing coat applied.
  • Make sure the surface being plastered is wet or PVA applied first before any plastering.
  • If it is a crack that comes back after you have patched and painted, then cut out the crack to about  25mm width (min) to a good depth (maybe back  to brickwork) then fill in with a backing plaster first  and skim after base coat sets. Apply PVA to the inside edge of the existing plaster to help re-cracking.
  • Try to avoid Patching ceilings yourself, unless your good at DIY. They are probally the hardest to get right and are the most noticable when done wrong.
  • If the area is being papered after, then most patches will be ok.
  • If your just painting, then think about Re- skimming the hole area. As patches will always show
  • make sure you strip back all wall paper  around the area to be patched prior to plastering.

Tips and Help for Plastering Preston

At plasterers preston we can plaster over all types and various thickness’s of artex.

Being a plasterer in preston we come across all types of finishes

Tips and help with Re-skimming from Plasterers Preston.

Not all textured finishes are artex!

  • Some finishes, whether its stipple, comb or old cottage may have be done in finishing plaster as well as Artex.
  • Artex is softer than finishing plaster and so is easier to scrape back. This is how you can mostly tell the difference.
  • If the textured finish is heavy it will either need scraping back prior to skimming or a coat of backing plaster applied.
  • Sometimes it is easier to plasterboard over the existing. This is the best option.
  •  If you have coving fitted that you want too keep, Plasterboarding  will not be possible.
  • The flatter you get the surface being re-skimmed the better the finish.
